I've made it! My very first ever HATE mail.

No one bothers to send you hate mail if you're a nobody. I got my very first one today, and hell, I hope it is the first of many, if it means that I'm gaining the success and notoriety that I want for FabGabs! This isn't really about my business, although it stems from my response to a "thank you" letter I got, saying that they appreciated that I use a plus size model for the plus size clothes. I'm not really plus, but I'm all I've got, right? I replied and included my measurements. I got this four days later (today) from a shill account:

Um okay my friend is friend with this couple who wrote you & you said you have a 31 inch waist? My sister is a 31 inch waist I know whut that looks like.Hahahahahahahahah-LMAO!!No way you are a 31 inch waist try 40 at least..I just saw your photos and gurl you are an XXXXL you are huge so why lie about it?WTF?That's so stupid.By the way liquid diets do wonders.Okay like bye.ugh and don't write back I don't talk to fatsos.

Don't worry - I won't let it go to my head or hurt my ego! Especially not when I have Lulu of Camera Bandit around to take foxy photos of me (can't believe I'm posting one of the cheesecake shots!)

  1. Ok first of all, you look hawt.

    Second, ladies crazy.

Third, I'd say yes! You have gained so much popularity, you can now get "hate mail" (more like "crazy mail").

And last, hahaha! I love Mr. Panda laying behind you, it's like you just seduced him and killed him, and have now decided to just sit there looking fab. You black widow!

  3. your beautiful!

and don't worry.. I've received hate mail as well.

  4. I love your look! What an immature note that was- jeez! You and I have very similar builds from the look of it- curves are a GOOD THING! Who cares about how many inches one's waist is? CRAZY SAUCE!
All the Best to you & KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Fabulous vintage shop- one of my FAVES.

  5. It took me aback at first, but I'm really totally cool with it!

I have so many plus size customers, that I know look beautiful and classic in their clothes - I don't think it is any insult. What is funny is that they make it such a big deal insult. And seriously, if I was going to lie about my waist size, I'd claim the 28" I miss so much!

  6. In working at a PP, I expected (but never got used to) the hate mail. As a vintage clothing seller, I never thought there would be any. I'm stunned!

And it's not just because of some hate mail sender that I'm saying you look fabulous. Your photos are inspiring!

    ReplyDelete
  7. That is a most immature piece of hate mail! I think you are gorgeous and look fabulous in your clothes

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm pretty sure that person is 14. It sounds like someone who is 14 speaking and when 14 year olds insult people it's not worth much.

    The cheesecake shot is awesome!

  9. That's just rediculous - if she had written it seriously I would have said "ok, maybe you should concider that" but it was written like a 15 year old skank. I think Solanahs comment says it all Ladies crazy!
It does'nt really matter what size you are - you always look lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  10. All I have to say is the person that wrote that is just an ignorant B****! And yes you are beautiful (how many years have I been telling you this now?)...

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wow there are Some crazy people with no sense of manners and reality out there! Very childish...anyways You look Fab! But congrats on the notoriety :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. That's utterly ridiculous. And slightly hilarious in the immaturity of it. And I must say, I think they're blind. I would never have even guessed your waist was even 31 inches! You look perfect! I probably would have guess 27! either way, you look lovely!

  13. The only hate mail I'd send you is that I HATE not seeing you more often! When you comin' back to LA? By all means frame it and put it right next to that first $ bill!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Clever darling, I'm actually VERY happy to say that I'm seeing a gent who has an excuse to go to LA with some regularity! So I may make it down once or twice this summer if our schedules line up. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to try to make in August in any case, I just *have* to get back to the Cicada club! And although I thought I might not do October for Santa Monica, my opinion could be swayed... I'm thinking on it.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hey, congratulations!Seriously, the time some people have on their hands...
And also the lack of understanding of basic measurements! I AM XXL, and dang proud of my curves- and I still only have a 35" waist.

What I can't believe is your awesome fantastic hair! Oh, how I'd love to get that style!

    ReplyDelete
  16. that's not even hate mail, it's simply stupid

  17. You're one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, I'm sure whoever sent that is seriously just jealous. You're hairstyle is amazing, by the way!

  19. Oh my gosh that is absolutely hilarious! Of course, it wouldn't matter if you WERE truly plus-size, but you're really not, and you look fabulous!

  20. man people are freakin weird- you have to laugh- love it!

    ReplyDelete
  21. What an immature letter - especially as this 'friend' of theirs seems to appreciate the use of plus size models. I would be tempted to write back to them and let them know what rude people they associate with - you worry what this person says about their friends (if they are in fact plus sized) behind their backs!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I get this sort of empty minded comments from day to day, either written or in the street...You look wonderful...They have the problem, their own lifes are so sad they have to try and attack ours.Keep looking amazing...

    ReplyDelete
  23. first of all I love that you sent your measurements, brilliant! secondly that GURL is almost illiterate, amazed she made it to the post office.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Pardon my French, but some people are just f***ed. Give me a break. As I learned when I was giving it my all teaching college, you can never please all of the people all of the time. What burns my butt is when people try to make their issues YOUR issues. Who gives a bleep what a person's measurements are? More importantly, what right does ANYONE have to judge another's appearance in this way? The fact is,for the record, you look AMAZING. You rock your vintage style like no other. More importantly, you are GORGEOUS inside and out. You are honestly the most talented, tireless, and generous vintage seller/stylist I "know." This person, who chooses to (or only knows how to) spell the words "girl" and "what" with "u"s, is a perfect example of the kind of shallow, idiotic vanity that our mainstream media has normalized and idealized as "cool" for far too long. All I would say to this "gurl" would be that maybe she should spend some more time developing her inner character and intellect instead of wasting time scrutinizing the world from such a vapid viewpoint.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Congratulations,

You have arrived! I get "weird" emails and comments often. Lets face it, there's never a shortage of messed up people out there who feel they need to lay their issues on you just because you're in the public eye. I had this happen to me just the other week with another blogger!

I like to remember this quote:

“Working women are interesting women. And they’re easier to live with. Idle women who can think of nothing to do with their time are dangerous to themselves and to others. The only ‘catty’ women I’ve known were idlers, with nothing to do but gossip and make trouble.”
    ~Carole Lombard

You are a beautiful gal...love the pictures! Keep up the good work!

  26. You are beautiful and an Inspiration, do not pay any attention to that jelouse crazy lady! xx

  27. Thanks everyone for the fantastic feedback! I really do appreciate it. Please, I don't want anyone to think that this hurt my feelings - being told I'm a FIVE (teehee) X doesn't make it so. I was taken aback and sort of stunned when I first got it, and was trying to decide whether my feelings were hurt - and then I realized that I find the letter really *really* funny, most especially because it probably comes from a girl who fits her own description, but doesn't know how to live in her own skin!

This is why I serve my beautiful customers who are COMFORTABLE with who they are, know how to dress to show their off the BEAUTY and have inner selves to match their outer!

Mary, that quote is really, REALLY fantastic and I'm going to save it. Thank you Baroness and Mary and Solanah and well, EVERYONE. =) The compliments really are quite the ego boost to wake up to.

  28. You are a stellar example of a lady who is defined not only by her beauty but by the content of her character.

I envy you and your business. Know that what you are doing works. I have to ask, how did you come to selling vintage? I don't know if I could actually sell what you're selling. Lucky girl.

By the way, that 3/4 view of your face is stunning. what a profile...

    ReplyDelete
  29. That is completely uncalled for! I hate how rude some people can be.

    You look fab :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. I wouldn't take it seriously as whoever wrote it sounds like they are maybe 12 years old. Some people just have nothing better going on in their lives so they must try and make others feel bad. You look great and thats all that matters!!!

  32. Wow! You must be getting popular! That's worse then my hate mail. he he.

But in reality, that bitch is crazy! I have met you, and there is no way in hell you are a 40in waist or XXXXL like she says.

You are so fabulous, and so is your buisness, dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Congratulations on your first hate mail! That means you're doing well.

I think you look fantastic, and you seem like you have a lovely personality.

It makes me sad that people are so angry and immature.

  34. I love you, I love your shop so

  35. Omg, I can't believe the nerve of some people, soo childish. And plus size??? No way, and you are one the most stylish ladies in the universe, I think you are totally fabulous!

I haven't received any "weird" messages or emails yet, I don't know how I'd react to be honest! Kim's message though, I can't believe that either! xx

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've never met you and have only just started reading your blog and can i just say that if you were walking down the street rocking the way you do In your photos I would turn and smile!

They obviously are hiding behind a facade, what a gutless wonder

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's so weird. I don't understand why people do that type of thing. I'm glad you aren't taking it seriously..I mean look at that terrible grammar!

Sounds like we are about the same size, by the way :) You look a lot more toned though!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Wow what is this like 5th grade!!! Haters. Darling you look smokin hot!!!! I got a little laugh from the letter, glad you shared, some people are just heartless and look to put other's down. Keep looking beautiful and staying honest.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kristi, toned is NOT a word that can be applied to my physique. Myself and the gym have a passing acquaintance... as in, I pay $40 a month and drive past, thinking "I should go some day"

    ReplyDelete
  40. You look ahhh-mazing! love your style!

    ReplyDelete
  41. aside from this childish message you were sent .. you are so gorgeous ,,you remind me of elizabeth short...no offense intended.. but she was gorgeous!!and so are you

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well, I think you're lovely. And please don't take this the wrong way, but maybe since you were caught off guard at being called plus, your reply was a little shorter than you intended? As its my first visit to your blog, I can only take this post at face value, but I feel like maybe your feelings were a tad hurt at the "plus" label. Perhaps the ugly hate mail came from the daughter of your thank you writer, it does seem like it was from someone very young!

In any case, you look very beautiful in these photos and you should just take the compliments and dismiss the hate! :)

  43. I'm 51 years old and let me tell you BABY It's all about how you feel and what you like. Don't worry about anybody else just do you. Girl you look good. From a old glamour girl Baby It's all about the GLAM!

  44. don't let silliness get to you!!! you look lovely!

  45. Your photos rock! and you are obviously comfortable in your own skin and Congratulations on that! Many people live their whole lives and never get to that place. I am 50 years old and very petite (size 0/1) and have a hard time finding appropriate clothes (not teeanger looking). I love vintage! Keep doing and loving what you do!

  46. LMAO!!! ooohh my. people are unbelievable, aren't they? LOVE your blog and shop!!!! xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  47. Just stupid. This person should first learn to spell like a grown-up, and then consider that the only time exact measurements matter is when finding out whether some garment will fit... You look awesome, and your shop is one of the prettiest I've seen.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Holy moly, how rude (and quite obviously ridiculous). It's people like that that, who are being nasty for the sake of it, whos oppinions don't count. Don't listen to them.

You are lovely, what pretty pictures you take!I mean that in a wow, envious way not a wow I am a creeper way (it's always nice to differentiate between the two when theres underwear shots involved! Ha!)

  49. Hey
Ive just started following through Vixed Vintage.
How terrible that people feel that they have to write comments like that. Funny thing is I recieved my first ever negative comment today too, although not to the extent that this one is.
Well I think you look brilliant, and the thing is there will always be those type of people out there. I just wonder what they get out of writing such things?

  50. Girlie, you are FAB-ulous! You rock vintage like nobody's business... and she knows it.

  51. Are you sure you're not kidding about the hate mail calling you fat? That person definitely needs thick lensed glasses! LOL
Seriously, the sad thing is, that they are very depressed, with no self concept whatsoever!
I used to look like you years ago, so watch that darn chocolate and icecream as you get older, as it's got to me!
You look goreous! You 'should' be proud that you can model your own fashions! You go, girl! :O)

    ReplyDelete
  52. You do look great in those photos. Now I am a plus sized gal going from a 38in waist to now a 34in waist, but I'm still plus sized. Don't know what that crazy gal's problem was. Except that she's probably jealous of your measurements.

Btw- I love so many of your clothes on etsy. My one let down, the measurements are two small. :(

    ReplyDelete
  53. People actually say shit like this? Wow, pathetic. Apparently this person doesn't know what a waist is, nor do they know how to spell or be mature.

I got a hate letter via Facebook from a former student TWO years after I taught her brief, three-month class. She told me that she hated me, my tattoos and "trendy hipster vintage clothing", AND my handwriting.

    You're good spirited. Props girlie.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wow, cool post. I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real hard work to make a great article... but I put things off too much and never seem to get started. Thanks though. pareo
